Concentrating sodium hydroxide by electrodialysis after the mercerization step

  • Original language description

The aim of this work was to investigate the possibility of the sodium hydroxide solution treatment after the mercerisation process. Mercerisation is a process at which a tissue is treated by concentrated sodium hydroxide for a short time and subsequently washing with both cold and hot water streams. Demineralization (concentrating) was conducted on pure solution of NaOH by laboratory equipment EDR-Z 10/0.8 using polypropylene based membranes Ralex® CM-PP as cation exchanger and AM-PP as anion exchanger. Different concentrations (1%, 3%, 9%) of NaOH solutions were examined as diluate, while concentrate chamber was 9% NaOH, and 3% NaOH was used as the electrode solution. The electrodialysis was configured so that when an electric field is applied Na+ and OH- ions are transferred through the membranes into the concentrate chamber. The efficiency of the electrodialysis was further optimized by study the parameters such as: mass flux, current efficiency, electrical charge, linear flow, energy consumption. The final concentrate solution conductivity was in the range of 310-350 mS/cm (corresponding to 9-11%) during all tests. Furthermore, since the electrochemical properties of the membranes play an important role in electrodialysis efficiency the resistivity and permselectivity of the membranes were measured before and after the electrodialysis process.
