Testing of selectivity of anion exchange membranes depending on the ion exchange groups
Original language description
In this work, three different kinds of anion exchange membranes with distinct anion exchange resins, AM-SBG1-HP, AM-SBG2-HP and AM-SIR-100-HP, were prepared and their selectivity for nitrate ions were compared by making electrodialysis tests and analyzing the nitrate concentration afterwards. A comparison with the standard anion exchange membrane of the company, AM(H)-PES, have also been made. AM(H)-PES and AM-SBG1-HP contain type 1 anions exchange resins (AERs), which means the functional group of the used AERs is trimethylamine. AM-SBG2-HP contains type 2 of AER, its functional group is dimethylethanolamine. AM-SIR-100-HP has a special type of AER, so called nitrate selective, which is supposed to have a higher selectivity for nitrate ions because of its functional group, the triethylamine. This modification increases the charge separation distance and the resin hydrophobicity [1], making it more difficult for divalent ions such as sulfate to attach themselves to the membrane. After the production, the membranes were put into the demineralized water bath and later, the AM-SIR-100-HP presented a large amount of bubbles, making it impossible to use these membranes in electrodialysis. For AM(H)-PES, AM-SBG1-HP and AM-SBG2-HP, two electrodialysis tests were conducted, one with positive polarity and the other with negative one. The solution used was composed of NaCl, NaNO3, NaH2PO4, Na2SO4, every salt of concentration 0.05 mol L-1. During the electrodialysis tests, samples from the dilute chamber were taken regularly and the ions concentration was measured afterwards by ion chromatography. As expected for nitrate ions removal, all three membranes have a higher selectivity for nitrate ions than for the other ones, although the selectivity for nitrate and chloride ions was very similar for all types of membrane. Therefore, the affinity relationship of the membranes.
