ELECTRODIALYSIS OF HIGHLY CONCENTRATED SOLUTIONS OF INORGANIC SALTS AND ITS OPERATIONAL LIMITS

  • Original language description

As natural sources of freshwater slowly disappear and surface water quality decreases, more and more stringent legislation is applied in waste water treatment. Soon neutralized brine will not be allowed to discharge, and therefore an economically viable brine treatment will be highly desirable. Electrodialysis presents an interesting technology as it can produce highly concentrated solutions that can be evaporated and hence produce zero liquid waste. In this work various inorganic salts were tested on a laboratory scale electrodialysis unit, in order to find its operational limits. It was observed that the final maximum concentration may differ significantly between electrolytes, but typically 200 g/kg should be achievable. Interestingly, electric current and therefore electrodialysis performance was decidedly smaller in the case of magnesium salts, when compared to potassium salts. Oversaturated solution was formed in the case of KNO3. These findings support the idea that electrodialysis may have its firm position in zero liquid discharge systems, but it is a complex technology that is best paired with proper pre-treatment and final evaporation step.
