Original language description
Heterogeneous ion-exchange membranes made without reinforcing fabric suffers from significant side-dimensional changes during swelling in different solutions. For compensation, it is possible to use a special design of membrane stack or to reinforce the membrane with fabric. However, the second approach degrades its electrochemical properties. Short fibres reinforcement is cheaper and enhances the mechanical properties of the extruded membrane without significant loss of electrochemical ones as was shown earlier. Nevertheless new research was needed due to the different materials, bipolar membrane application, and new processing method. The research was focused on appropriate fibre type selection concerning the resulting mechanical properties proved during swelling and the effective manufacturing process.
