Teachers’ View of the Teaching Profession and its Changes in Connection with the Use of Digital Technologies in Education
Original language description
The teaching profession is regarded as one of the oldest and most demanding professions and it has formed humanity since the start of its existence. The process of teaching of an individual begins just after he is born; the baby’s first teachers are its parents. Thanks to the rapidly changing environment, the process of teaching continues throughout almost the whole life. The school years are a key part of is, as this is the time when the most intense process of acquisition and development of knowledge, skills, abilities, attitudes and values that are important for personal development and involvement of each member of society is carried out. In formal education, teachers are the main actors of the educational process. The success in education is to a great extent reliant on the competences of teachers from the point of view of their expertise (in the area they teach) as well as pedagogy, or didactics, and personal predispositions. In connection to the rapid development of technology and the ensuing changes in all areas of human activity, also the role of teachers is changing. School is not the only source of knowledge, and teachers are not the only representatives of the truth and of all knowledge. This, however, does not diminish the importance of the teacher; the role is evolving – it is changing. The article provides a view of the current role of teachers in formal education in the Czech Republic. It focuses on the reasons for choosing this professional path, the satisfaction with doing the job and the changes in the teaching profession with respect to the involvement of digital technologies in education. The article, among other things, discusses the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting increase in the pressure to use modern technologies in education. The article uses the results of a quantitative research study conducted at the turn of 2021/2022, in which 93 teachers from 10 schools participated.
