This paper is focused on the problems of selecting the appropriate criteria. These criteria are then applied in process of project portfolio selection. It informs of the potential application methods DEMATEL. This method is able to identify the direct and indirect links between individual criteria. It facilitates the risk elimination of their duplicate or unsuitable use. We identify sixteen basic criteria affecting projects selection in portfolio. The criteria are from five fields: financial, technical,economical, social and project criteria. This set of criteria was subjected the DEMATEL analysis. It was realized on data obtained from four experts from academic or industrial sphere. The result of analysis is the impact-relations-map. For all calculations was used open source program Maxima.
