Degradation and movement of the herbicide isoproturon in soil studied by Photosystem II biosensor. Photosynthesis in a changing world (Photochange),

  • Original language description

Herbicides are hazardous to human health due to their toxicity or carcinogenity. Certain compounds with slow degradation can be accumulated in soil and ground water, and subsequently in plant products. Two main analytical methods - liquid chromatographyand immunodetection for determination of herbicide residues are not suitable for routine screening of great number of samples since they are expensive and time consuming. Chemical methods are sensitive and precious, but biological methods better reflectthe real biological effect of herbicide residues present in the sample. The goal was to develop an electrochemical biosensor for detection of photosynthetic herbicides based on Photosystem II (PS II) complex (Koblizek at al. 2002). The PSII complex wasisolated from the thermophilic cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus. This preparation was immobilised on the working platinum electrode of screen printed Pt:Ag/AgCl sensor and mounted into a flow cell with illumination. In the field exper
