Original language description
Jiří Gruša (1938 - 2011) was a recognized Czech-German writer and his legacy of texts in two languages has not been considered bilingual only, but also bi-cultural (Cornejo 2010). Gruša was brought up in no bilingual environment - a fact that makes him an outstanding writer; his switch of literary codes came as a natural follow-up to his "having been exiled" from his native country, Czechoslovakia, in 1981. Gruša, having suffered a traumatizing removal from his own country he had not planned to leave, found himself in a situation of not having either a language for his art or his readers. The study of Gruša naturally leads to the study of literary multilingualism, proving more than erudition, experience and adoption of a second literary tongue.
