Original language description
Central Europe is a region of permanent motion and change and has been a contact zone between political, cultural and economic traditions, values and aspirations between the Nordic states, southern Europe, especially the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Russia in the East and Germany in the West. With changes selectively directed, but otherwise suppressed by communism, the end of this form of regime in 1989 in Central Europe triggered intense processes of change, mostly as a way of seeking to 'catch up' with western Europe in political, economic and cultural terms. The particular message of this collection of essays is that 'transition' has not merely been a process 'on the ground' as object of investigation and discussion, but has also affected the observers,especially academic commentators and analysts - both within Central Europe, but also outside.
