Green Recycling and Industrial Applicability of Waste Polyurethane Foams

  • Original language description

Continuously increasing world production of flexible polyurethane (PUR) foams during previous years is accompanied by accumulating large volumes of waste material coming out of, for instance, end-of-life car seats and mattresses. One of known methods that deal with the global problem of disposing the waste PUR foams is chemical recycling mainly by diethylene glycol. We are showing that the petrochemically derived diethylene glycol can be effectively replaced by variety of biobased polyols derived from plant oils such as castor, soybean or canola oil. Our exploratory research confirmed that the resulting mixtures of hydroxy functional oligomers are usable for making of rigid PUR thermo-insulation foams and alternatively also for making of PUR coatings, cast resins and elastomers. All these materials made by combining waste and biobased raw materials can be regarded as a new generation of cost-effective and environmentally friendly end products. Results of our work will be discussed.
