The invention relates to a method of dividing a rodlike or tubular object made from a brittle material, particularly glass, in which at least one circumferential scratch is first formed on the surface of the object and then a force impulse or impulses are applied to the object being divided, wherein, in order to divide the portion of the object being divided, at least the surface area of the circumferential scratch is placed, with a radial clearance, between the ends of the sonotrodes arranged around the entire circumference of the scratch, wherein the ends of the sonotrodes and the circumference of the scratch are sunk in the same working fluid, and then acoustic waves are sent from each sonotrode to the point of the scratch, thereby putting, at this point, the object being divided under a tension stress greater than the tensile strength of the material of the object being divided. The invention relates to a device for dividing a rodlike or tubular object made from a brittle material.
