    Simulation of Unsteady Turbulent Flows Using the Finite Element Method

    The unsteady flow past a cylinder was numerically simulated using a computational code based on the finite element method with the streamline-upwind/pressure-stabilized Petrov-Galerkin approach. For turbulence modelling, the Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) model was adopted. The instantaneous and time-averaged velocity field was presented in the wake of the cylinder. These results obtained were compared with the corresponding results provided by the large eddy simulations (LES) and experiments and an agreeable match was found. The flow analysis also revealed that the flow periodicity appeared with the Strouhal number of 0.19. Furthermore, the effect of the turbulence on the unsteady flow, was demonstrated using the magnitude of the turbulent eddy viscosity.

    Nestacionární proudění kolem válce bylo studováno numericky, přičemž k simulaci byla využita metoda konečných prvků se stream-line a tlakovou stabilizací. K turbulentnímu modelování byl použit model DES. Úplav za válcem byl vyhodnocen prostřednictvím okamžitých a časově zprůměrovaných hodnot rychlostí. Získané výsledky byly úspěšně porovnány s LES simulací a experimenty.
