Determination of the residual gas fraction in the cylinder of an SI piston engine
Original language description
The paper deals with the determination of residual gas fraction in the fresh cylinder charge in vehicle spark ignition (SI) engine at a range of operating conditions. Experiments were conducted for various operating modes of engine to get the input datato the quasi static computational model that simulates the engine working cycle (including the exchange of the cylinder charge). The mass of exhaust gas that was left in the cylinder at the end of exhaust stroke was determined computationally. This workalso indicate the influence of the exhaust gas that flows back to the inlet manifold after the start of inlet valve opening and the exhaust gas content in compression volume as final residual gas that shared in fresh cylinder charge. To sum up, each partof fresh cylinder charge, air and fuel consumption by engine were estimated from the engine simulation which has been validated with experimental measurements of three cylinder SI engine running. Its accuracy is satisfactory.
