Performance of a modern diesel engine powered by diesel fuel, rapeseed oil and a diesel-rapeseed oil mixture
Original language description
Non-esterified vegetable oils, a renewable energy resource, are considered as one of the possible alternatives to petroleum-based fuels. In contrast to the diesel fuel traditionally used in compression ignition engines, rapeseed oil has a higher and temperature-dependent viscosity. Past experimental work on the performance of diesel engines fueled by rapeseed oil was performed on engines with volumetric fuel metering. Newer Common Rail fuel injection systems, however, use metering based on fuel pressureand the length of the injector opening. In this work, a Cummins ISBe4 engine with a Common Rail system has been operated on diesel fuel, fuel-grade rapeseed oil heated to about 50°C, and a mix of equal masses of these two fuels. Operation on pure rapeseed oil has resulted in about 10% decrease in maximum torque and a non-uniform changes in emissions of gaseous pollutants. The results show that rapeseed oil and its mixture with diesel fuel can potentially be used in an engine with a Comm
