Proof of coaxial structure of core/shell nanofibers with phase contrast method

  • Original language description

Core/shell nanofibers are bi-component nanofibers composed of two components. The shell is most commonly by a spinnable polymeric material, while the core can be spinnable or un-spinnable material. We can use e.g. liquids, drugs, disinfection, growth factors or liposomes as core material. Core/shell nanofibers are produced by a special technology known as coaxial electrospinning or core/shell electrospinning. The analysis of the coaxial structure of nanofibers is not easy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy or cutting by an ion beam are commonly used methods. The problem is these methods are difficult and expensive. Only some centers and universities have available these special equipments. Our article describesa special new method for easy detection of core/shell structure of nanofibers. The phase contrast method allows proof of coaxial structure using elements with higher atomic number in core of core/shell nanofibers. Scanning electron micros
