    AC Electrospinning: Theory and Applications

  • Original language description

Since the rapid developments in nanoscience and nanotechnology, nanofibrous composite yarns may open a range of new possibilities in environmental applications, biomedicine, filtration, food, and energy. The direct current (DC) high-voltage based electrospinning technology has been playing a major role in the process of electrospun fibers fabrication since it has been theoretically and experimentally well studied. Recently, alternating current (AC) high voltage-based electrospinning technology has been emerging. It was reported that the viscoelastic liquid under AC electric field creates a plume of electrospun fibers, which results in a higher throughput. Furthermore, the plume consists of positive and negative charged segments due to the periodical changes in electrical polarity. The electric wind makes this process a collectorless, high throughput technology. Unlike in the case of DC electrospinning, until now, the theory of AC electrospinning remains inadequately studied. This work analysis the electrohydrodynamic instability of polymeric liquid that is exposed to an external AC electric field using the linear stability analysis. It leads to the Mathieu equation for the temporal evolution of the capillary wave amplitude which governs the onset of electrospinning. The solution of the Mathieu equation enables the prediction of characteristic hydrodynamic time for the onset instability and the distance between the neighboring jets. AC electrospinning has the potential to be linked to another technology for fabricating not only fibrous web and also complex structures at the industrial scale since there is no obstacle, such as an electrically active collector, along the spinning line. For instance, it is much more facile to coat the emerging fibrous plume around a classic thread to produce core-nanofibrous sheath yarns so-called composite yarns. These composite yarns can be easily braided and whose sorption and filtration properties will significantly differ from that of conventional ones. The nanofibrous braided yarns may also have great potential uses in the field of medicine. These kinds of nanofibrous braided yarns can meet the criteria for medical applications as a result of their unique characteristics, including the possibility of their chemical and biological functionalization and mechanical properties.
