Effects of loading conditions, temperature, and magnetic field on the dynamic compressive behavior of an isotropic magnetorheological elastomer
Original language description
An isotropic magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) has been prepared by filling magnetically sensitive micro-sized carbonyl iron particles (CIPs) into silicone rubber. The dynamic mechanical behavior of the isotropic MRE was investigated through cyclic compression tests using the Instron Electropuls E3000 testing system. Effects of pre-strains (5-20%), strain amplitudes (0.1-3%), frequencies (1-50 Hz), magnetic field intensities (0-0.296 T), and temperatures (RT-60 degrees C) on the dynamic compressive properties of the isotropic MRE were examined. Although the storage and loss moduli of the isotropic MRE increased with increasing the pre-strain and magnetic field intensity, they decreased with rising strain amplitude and temperature. The storage modulus of the isotropic MRE was enhanced considerably with increasing frequency to about 20 Hz, which then increased gradually. The loss modulus of the isotropic MRE increased significantly with increasing frequency to about 20 Hz and then changed slightly. The dependence of the isotropic MRE dynamic moduli on the frequency at different pre-strains, strain amplitudes, magnetic field intensities, and temperatures was numerically studied using a fractional derivative viscoelastic model. The model was fitted well to the dynamic moduli of the isotropic MRE. The model parameters were identified by fitting the dynamic moduli to the measured data of the isotropic MRE. The dynamic moduli of the isotropic MRE estimated from the investigated model with fitted parameters were in good agreement with the measured data.
