Efficiency-optimized Designs of Vibration Control and Energy Harvesting Devices

  • Original language description

In the semi-active vibration control device, the piezoelectric actuator is attached to the vibrating structure and connected to an active analog electrical shunt that behaves as a negative capacitor. The word "active" means that the electrical shunt consists of a electrical source and the operational amplifier. The energy harvesting device consists of the piezoelectric actuator attached to the vibrating structure and connected to a passive diode rectifier with charge storage. It is seen that although the two aforementioned devices are designed for a different purpose, they have the same system topology and they differ only in the direction of the electric energy flow. In this paper, there will be analyzed strengths and weaknesses of the typical realizations of the energy harvesting and semi-active vibration control devices and discussed principles that can enhance their efficiency. Optimized concepts that eliminate weaknesses of the aforementioned devices will be presented.
