Original language description
The aim of this paper is to present the assessment methodology of economic development of territorial units on the sub-regional level. For implementation of practical economic and regional policy on meso level aimed at reducing regional disparities, however, it appears necessary to design effective approaches to the evaluation of functional regions. The issue of evaluation of functional regions appears to be crucial especially in countries with highly diversified size structure of municipalities. Here,municipalities with vastly different number of inhabitants coexist side by side and have different functions in a wider territory. Monitoring disparities at the municipal level gives distorted information, especially in case of small municipalities. Therefore, within regional development, it is necessary to focus on the linkages of wider territory than one municipality, but narrower than NUTS 3 level.
