Lecture at the 5th International Conference on Experiments/Process/System Modeling/ Simulation/ Optimization, Athens, Greece, 2013. The scope of this paper is to present the main tools of image analysis techniques applied in textile material research followed by its use in design and development of novel textile structures. The work shows acquisition of structural data, starting from fibers up to complex 3D structures (e.g. textile reinforced composites), followed by image data processing into requisiteform for application in structural design, or in numerical prediction of novel material properties (mechanical, thermal, electrical, etc.). Application of these methods in material research improves understanding and knowledge of relation between fibrous structure and final textile properties.
