Effect of Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes Proportions on Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Nanocomposites

  • Original language description

Carbon nanotubes are known for their exceptional properties that, when integrated in polymeric matrix, change the properties of their produced nanocomposites. In this work, the surface of multi-walls carbon nanotubes isfunctionalized (f-MWCNT) using carboxylic and amino functional groups and tested in Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) to evaluate the amount of functional groups attached to the surface. The f-MWCNT are added to an epoxy matrix to manufacture nanocomposite plates at different weight fractions (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 wt. %). Coupons of the nanocompositeare tested in tension to evaluate the tensile moduli and strengths. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to evaluate the topological and the surfaceproperties of the nanocomposites. Results indicate an initial increase in the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites at low proportions of the f-MWCNT followed by a decrease at higher proportions.
