THERMAL COMFORT PROPERTIES OF HAND TUFTED CARPETS
Original language description
Carpets are popular interior textiles used to cover floors in domestic as well as commercial buildings and are known to provide aesthetic appeal and comfort. While the mechanical properties of carpet are well studied to understand the soft feeling it provides while walking, the thermal transmission properties of carpets are not investigated to that extent although it is generally acknowledged that carpets provide thermal insulation to keep warmth inside the room. The present research work aims at investigating the thermal transfer properties of hand tufted carpets. A theoretical model is developed using simple network of thermal resistances of components including the thermal resistances of the primary backing and pile yarns. The measurement of thermalresistance was done using ALAMBETA instrument and cut pile hand tufted carpets made from nylon pile yarns were studied. Theoretical values were compared with the measured values and it was observed that the developed model could give con
