Preparation and characterization of mixed matrix membranes with antimicrobial nanopartilces addition

  • Original language description

Different nanoparticles were added into the polymer matrix in order to prepare membranes with antimicrobial properties, and thus mitigate membrane biofouling. Polyethersulfone with proper addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone were used as basic polymer matrix. Nanoparticles of TiO2, ZnO, CuO as well as multi-walled carbon nanotubes and silver behenate dispersion were subsequently added in the polymer matrix, and membranes prepared through phase inversion in coagulation bath. All newly prepared mixed matrix membranes showed comparable permeability and selectivity towards reference membrane (i.e. membrane without any addition, prepared by the same way). Moreover, morphology of membrane separate layer, evaluated based on the cross-section SEM images, was verysimilar to those observed for reference membrane. Only membrane with multi-walled carbon nanotubes addition showed some defects in top-layer as well as in cross-section structure. Enhanced antimicrobial properties were observed for membra
