Use of Different Nanoparticles for Preparation of Mixed Matrix Membranes with Antimicrobial Properties

  • Original language description

The main goal was to prepare and characterize new mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Different nanoparticles were added into the polymer matrix to achieve membranes with antimicrobial properties, resulting in mitigation of biofouling. Polyethersulfone with proper addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone was used as basic polymer matrix. Nanoparticles of TiO2, ZnO, CuO as well as multi-walled carbon nanotubes and silver behenate dispersion were subsequently added in the polymer solutions, and membranes prepared through phase inversion in coagulation bath.MMMs were subjected to permeability and selectivity tests as well as morphology and antimicrobial characterization. Hydrophilicity and stability of additives in the polymer matrix of membranes were assessed as well. All new MMMs showed comparable selectivity and permeability with reference membrane. The contact angle measurement proved that the addition of nanoparticles led to increase in hydrophilicity. Moreover, morphology of membrane separate layer (evaluated through cross-section SEM images) was very similar to reference membrane. Only membrane with multi-walled carbon nanotubes addition showed small defects in top-layer and in cross section structure. From all MMMs tested, membrane with CuO nanoparticles and silver behenate dispersion revealed most promising properties. Enhanced antimicrobial properties and mitigation of biofouling within the filtration test with activated sludge (municipal wastewater treatment plant) were observed. Moreover, both MMMs showed minimal release of additives from the polymer matrix in leaching test with demineralized water.
