Original language description
This paper describes the use of nanofibers as a holder (so called biofilm carrier) for biological or biotechnological applications (e.g. wastewater treatment). The aim of the study was to find out alternatives to current commercial carriers based on use of polymer nanofibers. Nanomaterials offer many advantages, including a large specific surface area and optimal surface morphology. Our results indicate a higher rate of primary microorganisms incorporation on nanofibers (up to ten-times higher in the early stages of immobilization), high stability (at higher reactor mass loading are microorganisms well-fixed) and activity in the resulting biofilm (high rate of pollutant degradation).
