Zero waste patterning in education of designers
Original language description
Fashion design study programmes provide a unique opportunity to equip fashion design students with the necessary knowledge, skills and creative problem-solving approaches to reduce the negative environmental impact of current fashion manufacturing processes. For undergraduate fashion design students, the topic of sustainability provides a suitable thematic assignment and an opportunity to expand their critical thinking skills and experiment with specific sustainable design practices while developing the creative process. The goal of the new teaching topics, which are introduced through art lectures assignments, is to incorporate sustainable design throughout the fashion production process. The aim is to integrate sustainability as a design standard, explore sustainable construction techniques and find new solutions through design concepts, material selection, pattern development, assembly procedures and product life cycle (in accordance with ecodesign principles). In this case study, 3 basic principles of the creative process for a zero waste cutting solution were extracted, which are suitable for art lectures teaching in BA and MA courses in fashion design. The article presents each principle on the basis of selected student projects from the Department of Design, Faculty of Textile Engineering, Technical University of Liberec (FT TUL).
