Piece-wise defined real functions on a finite point-interval partition of the real line are reminded, esp. the step functions. The sign function in general and esp. for polynomial and rational functions are developed combining the formal and geometric approaches. Presentation uses aggregation and pi-table structures. Attention is paid to methodical elaboration.
