Comparative Study of Parental Strategies in Urban and Non-Urban Contexts When Choosing a Primary School

This study explores how parents in urban and rural areas of the Czech Republic chooseprimary schools. Using mixed methods (30 interviews and a survey of 60 parents), itshows that school choice opportunities are uneven. Urban parents approach choicestrategically, comparing multiple schools, using diverse information sources, and plan-ning long-term educational paths. In contrast, rural parents face limited options, trans-port barriers, and strong community ties, which often result in choosing the localcatchment school and relying on family tradition. These differences reflect distinct“epistemologies of choice,” with institutional indicators dominating in cities and perso-nal trust in rural areas. The study concludes that school choice is structurally conditionedand calls for policies supporting access and information beyond major cities.
