Nanofibers as a Holder for Bacterial Biomass in Water Treatment Plants
Original language description
The presented paper covers the development and confirmation of the applicability of nanofibers for water treatment plants in hybrid bioreactors where immobilized biomass has some crucial advatages. Immobilized bacterial cells provide greater efficiency when removing slowly degradable contaminants from wastewater and offer a higher level of process stability in emergency situations. A nanofiber holder was developed with respect to its mechanical and chemical stability, colonization possibilities, and high surface area. A carrier through which a liquid continually flows was created (fixed bed); real wastewater was used and boundary limits were identified (retention time, temperature influencing removal efficiency); analyses were compared to a commercial carrier. The nanofiber holder provides important benefits, such as a large specific surface area, high biofilm resistance against external toxic effects and speed of bacterial immobilization.
