    Microbially influenced corrosion of container material

  • Original language description

    Microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) has been recognized as a potential challenge for the safe performance of deep geological radioactive waste repositories. This chapter presents an introduction to the influences of microorganisms on corrosion processes of metal containers. The principles of biofilm development on metal surfaces, microorganisms involved in MIC, and the relevant conditions for metal-microbe interactions in repositories will be described. Particular emphasis is put on sulfate-reducing bacteria, one of the most critical microorganisms for MIC of waste containers, whether made of carbon steel, stainless steel, or copper. Finally, we present the results of a long-term study on carbon steel corrosion in deep natural groundwater containing sulfate-reducing bacteria to illustrate the impact of temperature on the formation of different biofilms and corrosion behavior.
