Diversity in the Hordeum vulgare - Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei pathosystem
Original language description
To date, more than 100 resistance genes of barley to powdery mildew have been described. Moreover, there are several extensive collections of wild barley where a large number of new resistances could be identified. In total 972 spring accessions of Hordeum vulgare ssp. spontaneum have been studied at the ARI Kromeriz. 547 of them were resistant to all 6 or 8 European Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei pathotypes which were used. This is a result of long-term co-evolution of wild barley and the pathogen inthe Mediterranean region. In 1999, the B.g.h. population was studied in the Czech Republic. Based on virulence for 10 genes, 111 different pathotypes were distinguished among 275 isolates. The high diversity is a result of adaptation of the resistances which have been used in cultivars grown for about the last 20 years.
