Original language description
The paper examines whether a change of environment plays a role in the way men and women use evaluative adjectives. The starting point for the study is Lakoff’s (1975) claim that one of the characteristic features of women’s speech is an excessive usage of empty adjectives. The introductory part of the paper brings an overview of available research into evaluative adjectives. The analytical part offers a case study of male- and female-authored interior design blogs and motoring blogs. The distinctly different environments represent a variable that allows for an examination of the interplay of gender and language in stereotypically male and female domains. The results of the study suggest that a change of setting makes a difference in the way male and female bloggers communicate gender.
