Gendered Talk: Adjectives on Interior Design Blogs
Original language description
The present paper examines whether gender makes a difference in the way interior design bloggers use adjectives in their articles. The starting point for the study is Lakoff’s (1975) claim that one of the characteristic features of women’s speech is the usage of empty adjectives, which has since been re-examined in different environments with varying results. The introductory part offers an overview of approaches to language and gender, and a summary of available research into gendered language with respect to adjectives. The practical part brings a qualitative study of four male and four female interior design blogs, analysing 3,000 words per blog. The acquired corpus of adjectives is categorised with special attention to evaluative adjectives. The results of the study confirm that gender is a matter of degree, not an absolute dichotomy.
