This article deals with historical background of a non-profit sector in the Czech Republic and its development after the Velvet Revolution in 1989 until now. First part of this paper is concentrated on development of charity and volunteerism from the Middle Ages through the National revival till communist period. This introduction should help to understand starting point of the non-profit sector after 1989. Second part is focused on changes which occurred afterwards, especially these connected to legislation, and a growth on the non-profit sector in general. Finally, last part deals with changes which arise from the new Civil Code that comes to force in 2014.
