Research and development (R@D) is of a crucial importance in a creation of knowledge, products and technologies and the role of public support is significant. The goal of the article is to quantify effect of public R@D expenditure on economic growth in selected Central and Eastern European countries (CEE). The research is based on unbalanced annual panel data. The empirical evidence is performed for 8 EU countries, namely Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic and Slovenia during the period 1995-2014. Dataset is collected from the Economy and Finance database available on the Eurostat website and OECD database. The independent variables under investigation include traditional growth variables and control variables (e.g. Gross domestic expenditure on R@D (GERD), investment ratio, a share of the active population classified as HRST, inflation, population growth, and country openness). R@D expenditure are investigated not only as total GERD, but it is also divided in its main components by performing sectors. It was confirmed positive and statistically significant impact of government R@D expenditure as well as traditional growth variables.
