The chapter aims to enrich the debate on multilateralim by providing a non-Western understanding of the term that focuses on the political discourse of Japan and compares it with the appraches of the last two U.S. administrations. The first part offers agenalogy of multilateralism to attribute it to the Western thought within the field of international relations. The second part assesses the political significance of the term in the U.S. and Japan through a discourse analysis of official documents related to foreign security policy.
