I have known Matt Kroenig and followed his work for years. I have admired his courage, inordinary these days, to speak at fora and publicly stand for views which he had known well would win him few friends among those in attendance. This was the case with both the ‘Prague Agenda’ conference on disarmament, arms control and nuclear security and the Prague Insecurity Conference, both organised by my institute in recent years. Matt did so, and it was with – again, not altogether common – civility, composure and yet great conviction. It comes as no surprise to me, therefore, that his most recent book (Kroenig, 2018a), in which he proposes a theory of nuclear deterrence based on a synthesis between superiority and brinkmanship, is elegant and persuasive. This short essay will first present an (immanent) discussion of a few specific issues in the argument combined with their interrogation from an (external) vantage point of critical perspectives on (in)security before concluding with a broader reflection of scholars entering the policy domain as authors of truth, logic and critique and adopting a position closer to either παρρησíα ((parrhesia) frank speech) or – classically understood – rhetoric.
