Analysis of 42SiCr steel after Quenching and Partitioning by Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy

  • Original language description

The effect of heat treatment conditions on the microstructure and properties of low-alloyed 42SiCr steel is described with the use of a Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope (LSCM) as the main tool for analysing the final microstructures after different heat treatment strategies and fracture surfaces after mechanical testing. 42SiCr steel possesses in a basic state pearlitic-ferritic microstructure with strength of 980 MPa and ductility of 30%. Conventional treatment of this steel increases its strength, but the ductility drops down to several per cent. A new Q-P (Quenching & Partitioning) treatment, consisting of austenisation of steel, undercooling to a temperature between Ms and Mf, and subsequent annealing at slightly elevated temperatures, has been developed to increase both strength and ductility of steel. This is enabled due to the final microstructures of the steel made of cubic martensite matrix with 5-15% of stabilised retained austenite. The influence of various parameter
