This contribution deals with the control of the wheel drive with permanent magnet synchronous machine of the tram car. In order to achieve minimal dimensions of PMSM and on the other hand to be able to provide sufficient torque, the drive is operating invery wide speed range in the field weakening and with the machine load angle of 90deg. Thus, the new problem introduced by this drive is requirement for the limitation of the load angle. This paper presents proposed drive control, simulation results oftram drive prototype and experimental evidence of designed laboratory prototype of rated power of 10.7kW.
