INCREASING OF TRANSMISSION ABILITY AT HIGH VOLTAGE OVERHEAD LINES AMPACITY MODEL
Original language description
Rapidly growing amounts of energy transmitted throughout European power systems put high demands on the capacity of transmission and distribution overhead lines. With an increasing contribution of intermittent power generated from renewable sources of energy, a problem with overloading and congestion management occurs. The importance of real time operation and control of power systems has become inevitable. The purpose of this text is to evaluate the current situa-tion of insufficient capacity of transmission overhead lines and to introduce and explain a relatively novel term of "ampacity". As the ampacity of a conductor depends on certain weather conditions, measuring those variables enables operation of the grid according to actual condi-tions. Suchapproach, called dynamic line rating, unlike the fixed static rating, enables to utilize the maximum capacity of existing lines without a need of new lines to be built.
