Operational and risk analysis of the innovative traffic barrier for road tunnels
Original language description
An alternative to the classical approach to a traffic closure of road tunnels is missing in the Czech Republic and in Europe at this moment. The standard solution is a combination of traffic-light signaling, variable traffic signs and mechanical traffic barriers. This approach has some disadvantages e.g. the reliability of the traffic closure. There exist only a few different approaches in the world - e.g. a project in Australia, where a STOP sign is projected by a laser onto a water cascade, which "closes" the entrance to the tunnel. This type of barrier, however, cannot be used in Europe mainly due to climate aspects. These facts were a motivation for a project which should result in an innovative traffic barrier. This research project is supported by a TACR grant agency and it is managed by Czech companies Feramat Cybernetics, Technofiber and the University of West Bohemia. The new type of barrier is based on a net of flexible silicon components and composite strings which forms together a "roller shutter". The symbol STOP is depicted on the net. The whole device is placed on a portal outside of the tunnel entrance. In the case of an activation, the net is lowered toward the road. The size of the net corresponds to the width and the height of the tunnel traffic lane and profile. In the case of a high-speed collision of a vehicle with the barrier, there are predefined "crack points", so some parts of the net are broken out and it causes no harm to vehicles nor people. The first objective of this paper is to present the project, its actual state and future plans. The main part presents outcomes of two analyses - the operational analysis, which describes how the barrier should behave and the risk analysis, which shows possible risks and proposes reducing measures.
