Innovative traffic barrier for road and city tunnels
Original language description
This paper presents a project of an innovative, safe and effective traffic closure system for road and city tunnels. This system, based on a net of flexible silicon components and carbon strings which forms together a “roller shutter”, should solve a problematic closure of a tunnel during emergency and maintenance situations. Every traffic lane has its own independently operated barrier. The net has predefined “crack points”, which are activated in the case of high-energy impacts (i.e. collisions of vehicles with the barrier) and should protect drivers and vehicles. A classical traffic closure solution in the Czech Republic is a combination of a traffic-light signaling, variable traffic signs and mechanical traffic barriers. This closure system is often very ineffective. There is available only a few other more experimental than practical alternatives. This project is managed by Czech companies Feramat Cybernetics, Technofiber and The University of West Bohemia.
