Assessment of the breaking characteristics of high voltage circuit breakers with respect to the fault circuit interactions
Original language description
The presented paper deals with the description, assessment and evaluation of the breaking characteristics of high voltage circuit breakers (HVCB). The paper aims at the relations to the internal and external breaking characteristics defined by the field parameters in the extinguishing chamber and the parameters of cleared fault circuit and its mutual interactions. The purpose of the paper is to introduce and to explain the tight relations between processes inside the circuit breaker and in the fault circuit during the breaking process and to determine the crucial aspects affecting the successful or unsuccessful breaking process. In the first part of the paper, the topic of breaking characteristics is introduced with respect to the breaker's internal and external processes, which contains the description of the key parameters of burning electric arc and mechanisms of its extinguishing. The second part of the paper deals with the time and space intervals of the breaking process and the major critical influences are introduced. The paper concludes with the detailed assessment of the specific HVCB's breaking characteristics, its limitary areas are discussed along with the critical arrangements of extinguishing chamber and the current and voltage values of the fault circuit. In the end of the paper, multiple directions for further studies are introduced with the emphasis on the state-of-the-art modeling software FEM and CFD tools and its various possibilities for the topic's progression.
