Online Diagnostics Model for IPMSM Drives based on Inverter Switching Transients: Experimental Results and Validation

  • Original language description

This research report deals with experimental results and validation of a proposed online diagnostics model based on inverter switching transients and using an embedded system (i.e. a digital signal processor (DSP) and a field programmable gate array (FPGA)), suitable for electric drive in traction application. In this report, a novel embedded diagnostics for the detection of stator inter-turn short circuit (ITSC) faults in IPMSM drives is presented. The detector is integrated into the drive controller, which consists of a real-time estimation of the transient inductance of the machine based on the switching of the voltage source inverter, in the digital signal processor (DSP), using a finite state machine controller that allows an estimation algorithm to work in conjunction with the motor control, then a real-time fast Fourier transform (FFT) processor within the field programmable gate array (FPGA) to extract the spatial saturation harmonic. Finally a stator turn fault (STF) indicator derived from the saturation is implemented in the FPGA using the limit checking algorithm with adaptive threshold to take detection on transient states into account. Experimental testing is used to validate the proposed online detector on a dedicated designed interior IPMSM with modified stator windings.
