Traditional and Alternative Religiosity in Contemporary Czech Republic
Original language description
In this text, we explore the character of religiosity in the Czech Republic, a country ranked among the most secularized ones in Europe. We compare three generations of Czech Republic?s citizens and we expect to find differences in their religiosity dueto different religion climate during their socialization: The oldest and the youngest generations grew up in a rather liberal environment, either during the pre-communist First [Czechoslovak] Republic or during the post-communist era after 1989. In contrast, the middle generation has gone through socialization in the religion-hostile atmosphere of an atheistic regime. We focus on two forms of religiosity, a traditional and an alternative. As expected, we found higher religiosity among the oldest and theyoungest as compared to the middle generation. These differences were more pronounced in the case of traditional, church-oriented religiosity.
