Grundprobleme, or Popper meets with Kant

  • Original language description

The first part of the text is a historical excursion searching for the genesis of Popper’s philosophical opinions in the interwar Vienna. It analyzes the actual writing process and the external set of circumstances that surrounded his work on Die beiden Grundprobleme der Erkenntnislehre. The aim of this part is to evaluate Popper’s reception and intellectual self-development through the denial of neopozitivism. On the other side was Popper well aware that in order to form an international reputation, his path must be based on a solid relationship with members of the Vienna circle. The second “internalist” section further examines the Grundprobleme through the analysis of Popper’s specific interpretation of Kant’s transcendental idealism. Although Popper adopts Kant's transcendental method of questioning, he criticizes Kant’s transcendental method of deduction as rather dark and circular. But especially Popper criticizes Kant for mixing epistemological and psychological aspects of cognition. As a result of the modification of Kant’s formal apriorism Popper creates the so called genetic apriorism which further develops his own version of the deductive psychology of knowledge.
