Workshop on Neural Correlates of Consciousness
Original language description
Workshop focused on the concept of a neural correlate of consciousness (NCC) which is at the heart of the booming neuroscience of consciousness. The classical elucidation of this concept was due to Chalmers (2000), who understood it as that neural activation minimally sufficient for a conscious experience. Active participants were talking about Chalmers’ idea of NCC which proably does not capture what an NCC should be. Prof. Sascha Benjamin Fink was talking about how to operationalise NCC concept and how we should understand this concept of an NCC based on some historic, pragmatic and meta-theoretical constraints (i.e. metaphysical promiscuity, intertheoretic competition, exclusionary evidence, activation bias) and defend this NCC2.0 (which focuses specifically on a symmetrical correlation between types) against recent critique by Polák & Marvan (2018). Dr. Michal Polák and dr. Tomáš Marvan then, in their papers, commented on FInk´s approach and especially on his novel definition of NCC.
