The populist use of the history: Othering Germans in the speeches of Czech President Miloš Zeman?
Original language description
Discussion about populism seems to be one of the most influential debates within contemporary comparative politics. In general, populism is related to the key elements - „the people”, „the elite”, and „the others”. My paper should be a contribution to debate about populist „othering”, ie. creating enemies of true people. As C. Mudde argues, empirical research on populism should be combined with other research traditions (different in both thematical and theoretical regards). In my paper, I would like to combine research on populism with instrumental politicization of the past. For almost whole modern Czech history, the Germans played the role of „the others”. Especially due to consequences of WWII and after-war development, relations to the Ger-mans (especially to former Sudeten Germans) are a very important issue of contemporary Czech society and politics. The aim of this contribution is to analyze speeches of Czech President Miloš Zeman (who is, without any doubt, populist politician) and his attitudes towards Germany and Germans. Using CAQDAS realized via MAXQDA, I would like to analyze all Zemans’ speeches and his statements about the Germans/Germany. The key questions of my research are 1/ Can we say that Zeman otherizes Germans and presents them as enemies of Czech people? 2/ If yes, does he use „historical grievances” within this process, or does he concentrate on contemporary issues?
