"Past in the service of politics?” An analysis of Czech President Miloš Zeman’s statements about Germany

  • Original language description

Germany is very often framed negatively in the speeches of many Czech politicians and members of society. We can say there are two main reasons: The first one has historical roots: for almost whole modern Czech history, theGermans played the role of "the others", of enemies of the Czech nation. Especially due to consequences of WWII and after-war development, relations to the Germans (are a very important issue of contemporary Czech politics. Many Czech politicians instrumentally politicize this historical legacy and claim we have to protect Czech interests against Sudeten Germans. The second reason is related to contemporary Germany and his political and economic position. According to many Czechs, contemporary Czech Republic is kind of protectorate of Germany that wants to force us its economic and political vision of Europe. Both these negative stances to Germany can be found in the case of Czech President Miloš Zeman. The aim of this contribution is to analyze Zeman’ speeches and his attitudes towards Germany. The key questions of my research are: Can we say that Zeman otherizes Germans and presents them as enemies of Czech people? If yes, does he use "historical grievances", or does he concentrate on contemporary issues?
