International Relations in Central and Eastern Europe

  • Original language description

The discipline of International Relations (IR) in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) has undergone significant transformation since the end of the Cold War. Initially peripheral to the Anglo-American IR mainstream, CEE scholarship has progressively shifted towards a semi-peripheral status. Structural challenges have shaped this evolution, including limited theoretical contributions, underrepresentation in leading IR journals, and a strong empirical focus on security, geopolitics, and European integration. The field remains influenced by external actors, particularly U.S. and European funding bodies, contributing to academic development and ideological constraints. While Czechia, Poland, and Hungary have emerged as regional leaders in IR research, disparities persist within the region. The study of IR in CEE continues to grapple with balancing local intellectual traditions against the dominance of Anglo-American paradigms, raising questions about the prospects for a more autonomous and theoretically innovative regional scholarship.
